You can count on the teachers at Catgut Laboratories
to follow a few important principles:
- No two students learn the same.
- It is never appropriate to lose patience or get frustrated with a student.
- The lesson room is a place for laughter, as well as challenges.
Each of us brings experience not only as a teacher, but as a student and a performer to our lessons. We all work together to solve any problems our students may have, and share all the tips and tricks we pick up along the way-support each other, so when you sign up for lessons at The Lab, you’re learning from the whole team.
Holidays: If the store is closed, there will be no lessons that day. Check with your teacher about re-scheduling.
Recitals: We will have a Summer and a Winter recital every year. Everyone is required to attend-If playing alone in front of a group is just too much, we will work out something less intimidating. Everyone will have the option to be accompanied.
Don't have your stuff? Please come anyway- these lessons always prove to be valuable, as it gives us a chance to sit at the piano and focus entirely on theory.
Guidelines on Practice: Students will, at the end of each lesson, schedule their practice time for the week on a form provided by us. I understand that many students juggle quite a few extra curricular activities, but they do need to learn to manage their time to make as much room for practice as possible. The practice requirement is important because it allows the student to see progress! A student with poor practice habits often learns to hate the instrument. For this reason I will be strictly enforcing the practice policy.
Guidelines on Parents: Please be present for the last 5 minutes of the lesson so the teacher can get you up to speed on what the student is doing, what they are struggling with, and anything they may need your help enforcing at home.
If you choose to stay in the studio for the lesson, that's fantastic *however* We absolutely do not need help with discipline. A teacher needs to be allowed to develop a relationship and understanding with the student on there own time. It takes a while for the student to get to know their teacher well enough for the teacher to maintain a positive atmosphere despite any struggle or frustration.
Tardiness: This is as much a problem for us it is for students, as I am prone to getting extremely absorbed in whatever I am doing. If the lesson before you is running over, please knock then barge on in. If the teacher is practicing and has lost track of time, same thing. If the teacher is more than 5 minutes late, that lesson is free. Thank you for your understanding.
If you are late, there's not a heck of a lot we can do about that. If it happens too frequently we will probably look for a different time slot for you.
General Conduct Guidelines: No chewing gum. If you need a snack, it cannot be a sticky, sugary, or caffeinated one. Banannas and granola bars are great. Go to the restroom before your lesson. Make sure your nails are clipped nice and short. Don't wear a hooded sweatshirt or big jewelery.
Private fiddle or violin (depending on who you're talking to) and mandolin lessons are held at three convenient twin cities locations.
